It is clear that the saga of The Dark Knightor directed by Christopher Nolan has been one of the superhero trilogies that has performed best both at the box office and in critics. Scarecrow, the Joker and Bane were the main antagonists of this film series, and their performances were some of the best in Gotham, although the third installment could have had an even more iconic villain.
In a talk during the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the screenwriter of the saga Jonathan Nolan revealed that during the early stages of production on The Dark Knight Rises, the team had plans to have Riddler as the main antagonist. However, after having had the Joker in the second installment, Nolan preferred to opt for a more destructive and apocalyptic film.
“I started toying with ideas about having Riddler and what you could do with that character, but it seemed like it was close enough to what we had done with Heath that we had to change genres, right? I think one of “The things that excited me about Legend Rises were that, if you made this kind of urban crime drama for the second movie, then with the third movie we would have gotten something similar. It was a post-apocalyptic movie.”
Nolan explained that they did not want to repeat the formula of having an enemy focused on urban crime and decided to opt for something much bigger, as has been seen in some comics: turning the Gotham with an enemy that would turn the city into complete chaos.
The director wanted to present a situation that has rarely been seen on the big screen: Bruce Wayne He cannot cope with the chaos and ends up seeing how the city he must protect is invaded by a huge number of thugs and villains who will wreak havoc on innocent civilians. Likewise, the decision seems to have worked, since the film became a success and spectacularly closed an unforgettable trilogy.
