During Yamaha's Blu Racing Day in Misano, between one session on the Yamaha R1 and another, we had the chance to interview Andrea Dovizioso. Together with Dovi we talked about the most disparate topics, from his feeling with racing bikes to the hot topics of MotoGP.
Hi Dovi, how are you doing?
“Everything is fine thanks, I'm happy to be here.”
So, how's your motocross project going?
“Well, we're building a lot of stuff. But unfortunately it's not ready yet (referring to the track). I'd like everything to be ready but we still need a bit of patience.”
How long has it been since you rode an R1?
“Exactly one year ago at this event here! So I'm not dedicating myself to the asphalt but today I found some good sensations.”
How was the feeling on the bike? Is there always that shiver down your spine?
“Well, no, because I'm a bit of a perfectionist. To be happy I have to push in a certain way and they're bikes that I really don't know, so no. But I found some riders on the track and I started pushing. A rider He enjoys it when he sees that he gets to be with others, so I had fun.”
Everything happened during the weekend in Portimao. On the Pecco Bagnaia/Marc Marquez accident?
“I stay out of it, I don't get involved in journalistic squabbles.”
On Pedro Acosta, did you expect it to go so fast?
“It surprised me. I expected a lot but it did even more. Scary.”
Is he a rider who is giving everything right away? Will he always be able to be fast?
“What he's doing he's doing it because he's capable of doing it, he's not throwing himself into it. Yes, he's gaining experience without managing too much stuff, so maybe he makes mistakes, some things come out well for him, others badly. Since he arrived in the world championship everything he did was substance…”
In your opinion, which track can Yamaha give its best on?
“I don't know, but Yamaha is still not in a situation where it can achieve results. Yamaha is organizing itself to really make a change and I'm happy about this, but the change must be big, they have understood it and are starting to make it but it takes a long time so it's not a question of a few months or a few races. They are radical changes, they take years.”
If you decide to return to MotoGP, which track would you like to race on?
“So, if I could also decide to be competitive, Mugello is always a weekend in itself, spectacular. But there are many beautiful tracks… Valencia for me has always been one of the most beautiful, Austria is not one of the most beautiful tracks but I have some good memories.”
The pilot in whom you reflect yourself most.
“Well, everyone is different so no one is really similar. There are many different characteristics. I kind of see myself in Pecco, if you pay attention, in the shifts that don't count he's behind, in the ones that count he's in front. So I've always concentrated in trying to work as best as possible to bring home the best when it mattered. So a little bit in Pecco.”
