2024 will be one of the brightest years for Godzilla. After the premiere of Minus One at the end of 2023, the new installment of the Monsterverse has just landed in theaters: Godzilla and Kong: A New Empire. And although this last film will have a much larger budget than the first, it seems that its director has borrowed a scene from the Japanese production to fit it into his next film.
During an interview with the American media Deadline, the film's director, Adam Wingard, revealed that, at the last minute, they practically plagiarized a scene from Godzilla Minus One for his next film, specifically, a stomp that the King of the Kaijuus gave in one of the film's previews.
“We did, yeah. When we were in post-production on this movie, Godzilla Minus One was, I think the trailer had been released, I hadn't seen it yet, but when I saw it there's a shot that's very specific to Godzilla. He squishes his foot into the ground, and pushes the ground up, causing his weight to push the dirt up. We had a similar angle shot that we had been working on for a couple of months, and it never really worked. But the moment I saw that shot of Minus One, I thought, “That's what we have to do.” So I basically phoned my visual effects editor, showed him the trailer on YouTube, and I was like 'This is what we have to do.' So we copied the take as a little tribute to them. We plagiarized it.”
As Wingard tells it, the scene was so good for him that he wanted to pay tribute to it, although it seems more like a copy due to lack of ideas than a tribute in itself. Likewise, both films respect each other and, above all, they refer to a monster that has been, is and will be one of the greatest icons of cinema.
He King of the Kaijuus He is experiencing a second youth after missing several years and the fans celebrate it with joy. Without going any further, Minus One was the first film in the Godzilla franchise to win an Oscar, so it is undeniable that his legacy is getting bigger and bigger.
