X-Men '97 breaks a Disney Plus record

X-Men '97 proved popular with critics and audiences in equal measure, with the series reaching an impressive milestone in the history of the Disney+ platform.

The new animated series from Marvel Studios, X-Men ’97captivated critics and audiences with its two-episode premiere, and has now broken an impressive record on Disney+ as well. The long-awaited streaming series continues directly from the end of X-Men: The Animated Serieswhich concluded its five seasons in September 1997. While nostalgia can be a powerful tool, tying the series to an older show that many potential viewers found was a risk, but it's clearly paying off.

Disney has confirmed that the premiere of the series X-Men ’97 reached 5 million views in its first five days, making it the most-watched long-running animated series premiere on Disney+ since What If…? season 1 in 2021 (according to Variety). X-Men ’97 It currently holds an impressive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, backed by an equally positive 92% from audiences.

X-Men ’97 It is the highest rated X-Men product

Let us remember that Logan y Legion were the highest-rated film and television show of Fox's X-Men franchise. The disappointment of the franchise's latest films was at least tempered by the fact that Logan stands today as one of the best superhero movies ever made. This is largely due to its shameless reconstitution of well-established comic book movie conventions, choosing to extinguish the character who underpinned the X-Men franchise with an R-rated swan song. It was for its adult themes and touching story that Logan earned critical acclaim.

The same can also be said for Legion. The series adapted one of Marvel Comics' most intense and outlandish characters, David Haller, whose severe mental illness manifests itself in a host of different powers. Legion lasted three seasons and each never fell below a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as critics praised its trippy visuals and themes. Interestingly, the highest-rated movie and show in the X-Men franchise share adult ratings, showing an appetite for superhero movies that deal with darker themes.

The X-Men '97 series is now available on the Disney Plus platform.
