From 2014 to 2021: the journey of Godzilla and Kong in the cinema

In 2014, with the reboot of the Godzilla saga, a series of films better known as Monsterverse. So far he has four films. But this March it hits the big screen Godzilla X Kong, where these two creatures will work together in the new world order. But… How did we get here?

In 2014, at the San Diego Comic Con, this new concept was announced and sold with the following pitch “Inevitable conflict, let them fight.”. Legendary Entertainment confirmed that they had acquired the rights to Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah from Toho. And the first movie arrived

Godzilla, what this first film presents to us

It is a natural predator discovered in 1954. Its existence causes fear among the scientific community. But it is soon discovered that in truth, Godzilla is nothing more than a guardian of the balance of nature. He is on the side of humanity and will fight with creatures to defend the natural order.

In the Monsterverse, the enormous creatures that are dedicated to destroying everything in their path are known as MUTOS, and the organization that is in charge of investigating these MUTOS is called Monarch. This hints that there are more like Godzilla and other dangerous MUTOS. We are introduced to one of the key characters in this saga: DR Serizawa.

Kong: Skull Island. The other great protagonist

In this installment, we are introduced to Kong, a giant creature who, like Godzilla, is considered the protector of a small island where all kinds of MUTOS live. The islanders worship him as a god, and he protects them from other predators.

In 2014 it was announced that Kong would become part of this new Monsterverse and other creatures such as Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah were introduced in the film. In addition, it was a success on screen, which consolidated a good fan base, eager to know what these creatures would face in the future.

And then came… Godzilla: King of the Monsters

In 2019, this second part of Godzilla was released, where we were introduced to a family who lost their eldest son during the disaster in Honolulu a few years ago.

Years later, the family lives apart. They still have their little daughter, who lives with an overprotective mother, and who works for Monarch. They are both kidnapped by an eco-terrorist organization, and that is when her ex-husband, along with Dr. Serizawa, joins a rescue mission.

It is revealed that the mission of these eco-terrorists is to awaken a titan they call “monster Zero”, and Godzilla demonstrates, once again, that he is the one who protects humanity, when he manages to defeat this titan after many efforts.

Unfortunately, this movie has been the worst rated of all the Monsterverse movies. So far, not achieving a score higher than 6.5 on almost any review platform. It is nonsense, according to critics.

This new installment helps us continue advancing in the plot, in the origins of the mega monsters that live with us without us knowing, and above all, it helps us to unite stories and see how two completely different monsters have the same objective and fight. to ensure that humanity continues to live, keeping the rest of the titans at bay, although it is true that in this film both monsters are so different that they do not even seem to want the same thing, although we know that whenever there is something that disturbs the harmony, those are humans with great and dangerous ambitions.

Did Godzilla manage to redeem himself after this film? Was the Monsterverse saved? The answer is yes. It got very good reviews and managed to overcome the slump of the previous film, making the sequel possible that we will soon see in theaters.
