OTTAWA – President Ukraine , Volodymyr Zelensky made a surprise visit to You have after visiting the United States (US). Zelensky’s visit is part of his campaign to increase support from Western allies in Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion.
Zelensky flew to the Canadian capital on Thursday evening local time for a surprise visit after meeting with US President Joe Biden and lawmakers in Washington. He also addressed the UN annual meeting on Wednesday.
While in Canada, the Ukrainian president will speak before the Canadian Parliament on Friday local time.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who also plans to speak before Parliament on the same day, gave Zelensky a warm welcome on the tarmac at Ottawa airport as quoted by Euronews, Friday (22/9/2023).
This is Zelensky’s first visit to Canada since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. He previously addressed the Canadian Parliament virtually after the war began.
After their speeches, Zelensky and Trudeau are scheduled to leave for Toronto to meet with the local Ukrainian community. Canada is home to approximately 1.4 million people of Ukrainian descent, nearly 4% of the population.
Canada’s UN Ambassador, Bob Rae, said it was important for Zelensky to see the extent to which Canada supported Ukraine in the war.
“We’ve done a lot to help him and we need to do more,” Rae said.
“We will continue to do everything we can to support the Ukrainian people,” he added.
