Of course, the first teaser for ‘Tales of the Shire’ does not overflow with action and epic in the purest Middle-earth style. In it we can see someone (presumably a hobbit) coloring the pages of a book, where we see illustrations and snapshots of everyday life: some portraits of hobbits, objects, places, birds… nothing that makes you expect an adventure larger than life itself.
In fact, the game description provided by Wētā Workshop and Private Division talks about “the cozy Hobbit life” and “a moving new Lord of the Rings game.” So it’s difficult to predict what awaits us in this new game: a ‘Stardew Valley’ in Middle Earth? Will we relive any of Tolkien’s stories? At the moment, the only clue that the teaser gives is the sign of The Green Dragon, the inn in The Shire that Gandalf visited.
A year ago, Wētā Workshop and Private Division (specialized in the distribution of indie games like ‘OlliOlli World’) announced that they were preparing a game set in Tolkien’s worlds. In terms of rights, which is always a problem when we talk about ‘The Lord of the Rings’, even then there was talk that The books had been licensed, but not the main stories. That is, they could reinterpret the lore that underlies the stories they tell.
The game will arrive on consoles and PC in 2024, and will mark Wētā Workshop’s jump to more conventional games, after experimenting with titles aimed at virtual reality. Until then, we can only imagine how we will feel wandering around Hobbiton. The perfect way to forget the disaster that was ‘Gollum’.
