Sega cancels HYENAS, Creative Assembly’s game as a service, amid a restructuring that mainly affects European teams.
Sega has announced the cancellation of HYENthe game as a service I was developing Creative Assemblyin view of the low profitability of its European studies.
HYENAS has been canceled along with a number of unannounced games from all development bases in Europe, which will allow them a tax reduction on said projects.
In a statement, Sega also talks about reducing fixed expenses, focused on Creative Assembly. Due to these changes, the Sega Sammy group forecasts losses in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024.
Creative Assembly, an English studio founded in 1987, has been part of Sega Europe since 2005 and is famous for the Total War strategy series, as well as the acclaimed survival horror Alien Isolation.
Sega’s Hyenas won’t have a chance to bite
HYENAS was announced in June 2022 with quite a bit of fanfare (with a teaser that many thought was a new Ecco the Dolphin game…). It was a multiplayer shooter for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One and PC, in first person and in zero gravity.
The game was going to pit 5 teams of 3 people on very large maps that mixed PvE elements, and the objective would be to steal epic merchandise (almost all popular culture references, including nods to SEGA such as a Sonic doll) in spaceships.
HYENAS had some alpha testing at the beginning of the year on PC, but its development was “chaotic” according to VGC.
HYEN It was very difficult for him to succeed in the crowded market for games as a service and online shooters. It offered a really attractive premise, but it’s very difficult to win over enough audiences. Companies with more experience in these games like Ubisoft are having a very tough time, even Sony seems to be having difficulties in this field despite having Bungie.
