PlayStation exclusive games focus primarily on single-player experiences with a strong narrative. PlayStation has no plans to change direction.
In a leaked Q&A with Fidelity investors in 2022, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan talked about the company’s plans to release 10 or more live service games by 2026 and how this will impact its approach.
Ryan mentioned that it cannot be assumed that all of these games will be massive hits, and that it is not a necessary condition for doubling the revenue of Sony’s internal studios. He stated that the distinction between success and failure is not binary and that they will continue to publish visually stunning, narrative-rich first-person games that have been central to their internal publishing business.
Importantly, PlayStation exclusive games have been successful not only in the realm of video games, but also in other media.
The Last of Us adaptation has been a huge hit on HBO, and the movie based on the Uncharted game exceeded expectations at the box office last year. This shows that PlayStation’s focus on single-player experiences with a strong narrative has been successful in both the world of video games and entertainment media.
