Due to the recent success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Netflix has shown interest in securing the rights to make a live-action adaptation based on the world inspired by Dungeons & Dragons.
According to a report by Giant Freaking Robot, Netflix is in talks to obtain the rights to the Baldur’s Gate series. Although it’s unclear if this will result in a series or a movie, it will be based on Larian Studios’ intellectual property.
Baldur’s Gate, set in the Forgotten Realms, is a tabletop role-playing game series that was first released in 1998. Since then, it has had ten installments, including the most recent, Baldur’s Gate 3. This provides Netflix with great amount of material to work with.
We don’t yet know if Netflix will manage to secure the rights to Baldur’s Gate, but even if it does, it’s not unusual for it to cancel popular shows. It could also follow the example of The Witcher adaptation and replace its protagonists. Either way, bringing the video game series to Netflix will be a sure way to attract a new fan base. Let’s hope it’s worth it.
