Algeria, Nigeria, Benin and Zambia withdrew at the last minute when faced with Morocco’s proposal.
Morocco, a 2022 World Cup semi-finalist, has been named host of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, after its competitors, including Algeria, withdrew. This was announced in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, by the president of the African Football Confederation, Patrice Motsepe.
Furthermore, the 2027 edition will be held in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania
The tournament had not been held in North Africa since 1988. In that year, Cameroon beat Nigeria in the final and Morocco lost to Algeria on penalties. Indeed, the Africa Cup of Nations has often eluded the Atlas Lions, who only lifted the trophy in 1976 when they drew 1-1 in the final against Guinea in Ethiopia.
“I am very proud of Morocco,” said Patrice Motsepe. The competing countries of Morocco, Algeria, Zambia and the joint candidacy of Nigeria and Benin have announced their withdrawal, although these countries still made their presentation,” he said. “The main reason is to support Morocco in its candidacy to the 2030 World Cup, “together with Spain and Portugal, explained the president of CAF.”
