Record start for the Serbian, who has better numbers than CR7 and Pipita, never above 3 goals after 4 rounds
21 September – MILAN
Dusan Vlahovic’s childhood was similar to that of many peers with a passion for football: training sessions, matches with friends and on the PlayStation and champions to imitate and try to emulate. Among the idols of the young Dusan was Cristiano Ronaldo: when the Serbian was eight years old CR7 won his first Ballon d’Or with Manchester United and 13 and a half years later he took up his legacy. The 7 left by the Portuguese phenomenon ended up on his shoulders at Juventus, even if only for half a season, because as soon as it was possible (when Vlahovic arrived in the 9th era of Alvaro Morata) he regained possession of his favorite number. The same one that Gonzalo Higuain, the great center forward in the recent history of the Lady who left an indelible mark with his goals, wore at Juventus. Yet neither Mister 5 Ballon d’Or winner nor the record holder of goals in Serie A (36 with Napoli in 2015-16, a record equaled by Ciro Immobile with Lazio in 2019-20) had ever started so well in the championship: the 4 goals in 4 DV9 matches repeated for 2 seasons in a row are the best result ever for a Juventus attacker.

Vlahovic arrived at Madama’s court at 22 years old, with ample room for growth and a good chunk of future ahead of him. Ronaldo and Higuain, on the other hand, arrived at Juventus at the age of maturity and with a fair (euphemism, especially in the case of Cristiano) international experience. Dusan had spent a season and a half at high levels with Fiorentina without ever tasting the Champions League, which he then discovered with the Bianconeri. Pipita’s best starting score was 3 centers in 4 matches in 2016-17, the first year in Turin, the same for CR7 in 2020-21, the last Italian season, which however he scored in 2 matches before being put in the stands from the Coronavirus.

Scoring 4 times in a row is not something for everyone, even more so doing it for 2 championships in a row. Paulo Dybala made history for scoring 8 goals in 2017-18, the one in which he closed with his personal record in Serie A (22 goals). The following year, however, Joya did not have an equally brilliant start (zero goals after 4 matches). David Trezeguet reached 4 in 2004-05 and 2007-08, but never managed to maintain the same performance at the start for two championships in a row; Carlitos Tevez started with 3 in 4 in 2013-14 but stopped at 2 the following year.

Vlahovic is a subscriber to precocity records: in Serbia he was the youngest debutant in the history of Partizan Belgrade and also the youngest goalscorer. In Italy he was the first player of the 2000s to play in the league with Fiorentina. From precociousness to speed it’s a short step: last year, after the brace on his debut against Sassuolo and the 2 goals against Rome and Spezia, on the fifth matchday he stopped, rather than by his own choice or by Allegri’s will, rather than against Viola he kept him on the bench for 90 minutes to preserve him for the Champions League. This season the Lady remained without cups and Dusan can only focus on the championship. Yesterday in training open to fans organized at Continassa he and Chiesa were justifiably absent: personalized work for both, as sometimes happens to preserve those who have played the most. He will be there with Sassuolo, unless Max thinks about the turnover in view of the first round in midweek (Tuesday 26th against Lecce). Whether he is a starter or comes off the bench, the objective does not change: DV9 aims for 5 out of 5 in Serie A.
