Few anime have known how to play with mystery as well as Attack on Titan. The manga created by Hajime Isayama managed to differentiate itself from many other works by placing its characters in an apocalyptic scenario where humanity was being attacked by ferocious cannibal titans day after day, making it clear that one of the priorities of this story was reflect the drama that its protagonists lived.
The titans starred in many moments full of tension, but they were also accompanied by a good number of mysteries which made the Attack on Titan story much more interesting. One of them is that some of the 9 Changing Titans have shown to be able to speak while others are simply capable of roaring and the response to this particularity present in several of the most important titans of the work is much simpler than we can imagine.
Why can some titans talk and others can’t?
At the beginning of the second season we met the Beast Titan, a huge ape-like enemy that surprised the audience by their ability to fluently speak the language of our protagonists and even show interest in the tools they used to fight the titans.
The Freighter Titan contacted Zeke to confirm the arrival of his enemies.
We later met other titans with this same ability: the Pieck Finger Freighter Titan and the Warhammer Titan. These titans too They could express themselves without any difficulty proving to have a capacity absent in pure titans or in other titans with more prominence such as the Colossal Titan or Eren’s Attack Titan.
The reason why these titans can speak and others cannot It is directly linked to the anatomy they present, more developed and with better formed jaws in the cases of titans with the ability to speak while titans who cannot articulate words have jaws very different from that of a conventional human being or they are not completely formed, something that we can see for example in the particular jaw of the Colossal Titan. The only exception is Ymir’s Jaw Titan, which I could speak with some difficulty. As for pure titans, lack of intelligence could be the main reason they are not able to speak.
This skill was an advantage that the Beast Titan and the Freighter Titan exploited especially well, communicating frequently while developing their counterattack in the Return to Shiganshina Arc, considered by several readers of this manga to be one of the best Attack on Titan arcs.
