KIEV – President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday (4/6/2023), that Russian-Ukrainian war which has entered its 16th month has killed at least 500 Ukrainian children. Even though Russia claims not to target civilians, in fact, innocent lives continue to fall.
Zelensky gave the number after rescue workers found the body of a 2-year-old girl who died in one of Russia’s latest attacks.
“Russia’s weapons and hatred, which continue to claim and destroy the lives of Ukrainian children every day, have killed hundreds of people since the all-out Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022,” Zelensky said, as quoted by AP.
“Many of them could become famous scholars, artists, sports champions, contribute to the history of Ukraine,” he continued.
Zelensky said it was not possible to establish the exact number of child victims because of the ongoing fighting and because some areas were under Russian occupation.
“We must survive and win this war!” said the Ukrainian president. “All of Ukraine, all of our people, all of our children, must be free from Russian terror!” he continued.
Rescuers found the body of the 2-year-old boy Sunday morning while combing through the rubble of an apartment building on the outskirts of the central city of Dnipro.
The regional governor, Serhiy Lysak, said five children were among the 22 people injured in Saturday’s attack, which damaged two residential buildings.
