ORLEANS – Morris Wortman (72), a fertility doctor in New York, United States (US), who was accused of using his sperm himself to impregnate some of his patients who died in a plane crash.
The hand-built plane he was flying in disintegrated mid-flight and crashed in a meadow in the Orleans area on Sunday.
Wortman became a passenger in the experimental plane crash. The pilot, Earl Luce Jr, from Brockport, also died.
The crash of the plane, identified by the National Transportation Safety Board as the Wittman W-5 Buttercup, is still under investigation.
“Initial findings indicate that the wing of the aircraft detached from the fuselage and fell to the ground in an orchard,” the local sheriff, Christopher Bourke, said in a press statement reported by AP, Friday (2/6/2023).
The fuselage continued to travel west for 1,000 to 1,500 yards before crashing.
Wortman was a well-known doctor in western New York who was a frequent target of anti-abortion protesters.
He was sued in 2021 by the daughter of one of his patients, who became pregnant in the 1980s.
The lawsuit documents say the doctor secretly used his own sperm while telling the patient that the donor was a local medical student.
It is said that the doctor kept the secret even after his daughter, his biological offspring, became his gynecological patient.
His daughter discovered Wortman was the donor after DNA tests revealed he had at least nine half-siblings.
The civil suit, which is pending in Monroe county court, says follow-up DNA tests on Wortman’s daughter from her first marriage confirmed a genetic link.
Wortman did not comment when the lawsuit was filed.
