Mexico received 3.5% more international tourists last April than in the same month of 2022although the income of foreign currency for this item decreased by 1.9%, reported this Friday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
3.17 million foreign tourists entered the country in the fourth month of 2023, compared to 3.06 million in the same period of the previous year, according to the report of the autonomous body.
The main annual upturn occurred in border tourists, which in April 2023 grew by 18.6% to exceed 1.51 million people, while those who arrived by plane fell by 5.2% to 1.71 million.
On the other hand, in April 2023, the total expenditure of international tourists decreased by 1.9% year-on-year, going to two thousand 232.1 million dollars from a previous figure of two thousand 274.2 million dollars.
In addition, the average expense of each tourist decreased by 5.2% to 703 dollars in April compared to $741.33 in the fourth month of 2022.
The data reflects a slowdown in the upward trend of tourism in Mexico, which had 38.3 million international tourists during 2022, 20.3% more than in 2021.

The foreign exchange income from international visitors last year was 26 thousand 346.9 million dollars, more than 42% than a year before.
The economy related to tourism in Mexico, which the Inegi calls the tourism Gross Domestic Product (GDP), grew by 14.4% in 2022.
