TEL AVIV – Missiles fired by Palestinian militants are often intercepted by Iron Dome Israel. This system is an artificially effective and innovative mobile defense solution Israel to counter short-range rockets and 155 mm artillery shell threats with a range of up to 70 km.
As quoted from Armyrecognition, Iron Dome was developed by the Israeli Defense Company Rafael. Development on Iron Dome began in January 2008 and was nearly complete in just two and a half years. The system uses a unique interceptor with a special warhead that blows up any airborne target in seconds.
Iron Dome is a cost-effective system that can deal with multiple threats simultaneously and efficiently. The Iron Dome system has been selected by the Israeli Ministry of Defense as the best system that offers the most comprehensive defense solution against various threats in a relatively short development cycle and at low cost.
The Iron Dome system, which is expected to provide defense for residents of Southern Israel against rockets launched from the Gaza Strip, is entering the final stages of performance testing and was even presented this week for the first time at the technological weapons exhibition, which was held at the Rabin military base.
The Iron Dome system entered service in early 2011, initially being deployed at an air force base in southern Israel. These will be erected in other areas, such as the town of Sderot, during significant escalations along the Gaza border.
In November 2020, Iron Dome entered service with the United States (US) Army. In January 2021, the US Army took delivery of Israel’s second Iron Dome air defense missile system. On September 22, 2022, Romania requested the purchase of Iron Dome.
Iron Dome consists of three basic elements – radar detection and tracking, battle management, and weapons control system (BMC). A missile firing unit (MFU) with 20 ready to fire container launchers (three launchers for one battery).
The EL/M-2084 radar system was developed by Israeli defense company Elta. The control system had been built by Israeli software company mPrest Systems, which was hired by Rafael.
