WASHINGTON – United States of America (US) on Friday (9/6/2023) announced a USD 2.1 billion (IDR 31.2 trillion) military aid package for Ukraine . The announcement coincided with Kiev’s long-awaited counter-offensive, aimed at expelling Russian forces from the country.
The package includes missiles for the Patriot air defense system, artillery shells, drones and laser-guided rocket system ammunition. Previously, the US had repeatedly sent military aid packages to Ukraine.
“The new weaponry, illustrates a continued commitment to Ukraine’s critical short-term capabilities as well as the enduring capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend its territory and deter Russian aggression in the long term,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
It takes up to the $40.4 billion worth of military supplies that the US has provided to Ukraine since early 2021, the most since Russia invaded the country on February 24, 2022. It came at a crucial point in the war.
Ukraine has been stockpiling weaponry and training troops in preparation for a possibly grueling ground campaign to try to force Russian troops to withdraw from much of southeastern and southern Ukraine they occupy.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Friday that the offensive had begun, amid reports that Ukrainian troops had launched attacks at three key points along the long front.
