America is upgrading its Doomsday planes. They are called that because they will be in charge of communications, if there is a nuclear war and the president has to press the fateful Red Button.
The United States maintains a fleet of 16 E-6B Mercury aircraft. It’s about the classic Customized and militarized Boeng 707to fly in case of a nuclear war.

The Doomsday Plane
The official function of the plane E-6B Mercury is to “provide reliable and durable survivable command, control, and airborne communications in support of the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the United States Strategic Command.”
It is colloquially called doomsday planebecause among its tasks is to ensure communications between the president’s plane, before an alleged order to press the Red Button (launch the nuclear missiles), and the National Command Authority, which executes the order.
The fleet is being updated these days by the company Northrop Grummanwhich has already delivered the first of these E-6B Mercury aircraft.
According to the press release, this update “applies efficiency measures and improves the command, control and communications functions of the aircraft.”
