The partnership that spawned the Super Mario movie looks set to continue, with an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.
Super Mario Bros. The Movie (here our review), was a great success. It is evident that the collaboration between Nintendo, Universal Pictures and the animation studio Illumination has been fruitful for all parties involved, and it seems they are looking to join forces for another projectwhich however would not be linked to Mario.
Second Jeff Schneidera Hollywood insider, Nintendo is close to settling with Universal Pictures for an animated film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, with studio Illumination once again handling the film. Speaking recently on The Hot Mic podcast, Sneider said the deal will cost Universal “a lot of money” given the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. The Movie, although agreement would be close.
A film based on The Legend of Zelda has, of course, been in high demand ever since and many fans of the series are of the opinion that an animated film would be the right direction. Given the enormous critical and commercial success that the franchise continues to enjoy, it’s no surprise that Nintendo sees room for further growth beyond the gaming medium.
We recall among other things that Shigeru Miyamoto himself recently hinted that new films related to the Nintendo world will arrive.
In any case, if the agreement between Nintendo and Universal is really close, hopefully an official announcement and concrete details on the project will arrive more or less soon. We will let you know of course, in case of confirmations.
