“Street of Mermaids” It’s not just the name of the segundo disco de Kaaba, a popular grouping from the 90s, is also the band’s most successful song. In Spotify has more than 190 million views; however, taking into account that it was released in 1996, it would hardly be a small part of all the times it has been listened to.
However, few of Kabah’s fans really know what’s behind his peculiar handwriting. At first it was believed that the theme referred to global warming, the use of substances and many other theories. One of them, and perhaps the most controversial, is that he actually talks about sex workers, whom mentions how the sirens and despite the fact that none of the members of the band had spoken about it, now it is Apio Quijano who confirmed this version.
During a conversation with his classmates “The House of Celebrities”a program in which he currently participates, the fashion expert also revealed that “Street of Mermaids” portrays the day to day of one of the areas most popular in Mexico Citythe historic center and one by one he was deciphering the elements that exist in the letter.
He explained that as a group they reached an agreement to write and sing the song, but that what is behind it is much less “magical” of what is known.
“It is an agreement that we made, there is a story behind it. It really is about life in the center. Everything is like a similarity, the unicorns are the children who go to school. The witch is the typical gossipy neighbor,” he said. to Sergio Mayer, Poncho de Nigris, Sofia Rivera Torres and Marie Claire Harpwith whom he was talking.
But the surprise came when Quijano confessed that the protagonists of the story, the mermaids, are really the prostitutes of this area: “The fairies are all the working women and the mermaids are the prostitutes,” she added. He was immediately questioned about it and explained that transferring them to fantasy is a way of giving them recognition that they do not have: “It is like a way of giving them that credit and it is apart from the women of the night as magic,” he concluded.
In the talk, Apio also recognized that “La calle de las sirenas” is the most profitable song they have had, not only because it earned them more than two million pesos, but also because it became a gold and platinum record, both in Mexico as in USA; something that only the greatest in music could achieve at that time.
