CHENGDU – A boss of China’s state-owned enterprise (BUMN) was fired after being caught having an affair with young women. Their scandalous story may have come to an end, but the woman’s pink dress went viral and sparked a spike in purchases of similar dresses online.
Hu Jiyong was sacked as general manager of Beijing Huanqiu Construction, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum (CNPC) last Wednesday after a video went viral showing him holding hands with a much younger woman while shopping in downtown Chengdu.
The video spread widely on Douyin and was widely used as a meme.
The young woman Hu was having an affair with was known as Dong Sijin. She turned out to be Hu’s colleague before she was fired.
The short video showing Hu, who is wearing a matching pink polo shirt, and Dong walking hand in hand has been viewed millions of times.
Within hours of the video appearing, CNPC released a statement saying Hu had been fired. Dong was also relieved of his duties.
But the dismissal of the Chinese BUMN boss has not stopped the social media users’ meddlesome behavior in that country.
Some of them said Dong’s own father was a senior executive at CNPC, and that Dong was known for posts on social media flaunting his taste for expensive designer handbags and luxury vacations.
Social media users noted that Dong was carrying a Lady Dior handbag which retails for around $5,954 in the video.
