KHARTOUM – The warring parties in Sudan have agreed ceasefire nationwide for 24 hours starting Saturday (10/6/2023). This was revealed in a joint statement from the governments of Saudi Arabia and the United States, Friday (9/6/2023).
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America announce that the representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreed to a 24-hour ceasefire across the country starting on June 10 at 6:00 Khartoum time,” the statement said. “The parties agree that during the armistice they will refrain from prohibited movements, attacks, the use of aircraft or drones, aerial bombardment, artillery strikes, reinforcement of positions and troop resupply, and will refrain from seeking military advantage during the armistice,” it continued. the statement.
“They also agreed to allow unhindered movement and delivery of humanitarian aid throughout the country,” he added.
However, the statement issued a warning to the warring parties: “If the parties fail to comply with the 24-hour ceasefire, the facilitators will be forced to consider suspending the Jeddah talks”.
An earlier truce struck by Saudi Arabia and the US broke down after the two sides of Sudan clashed accusing each other of serious violations of the truce.
The White House has warned that sanctions will be imposed on major defense companies and individuals who “perpetuate violence” in Sudan if warring parties fail to comply with a ceasefire agreement.
“Once it becomes clear that the parties are really serious about complying with the ceasefire, the facilitators are ready to resume deferred discussions to find a negotiated solution to this conflict,” Saudi Arabia and the US said in an earlier statement.
