Dense smoke caused by some large fires in progress in the Canadian province of Quebec has spread in various areas of the United States and Canada: since yesterday images and videos of US cities have been circulating, including New York, completely immersed in smoke, which makes the air greyish and in some cases orange, depending on the light. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued air quality alerts on Tuesday in several states, including New England, Illinois, Wisconsin, Connecticut and Minnesota.
Most of the smoke comes from the Canadian province of Quebec, where about 160 fires are currently raging. The cities most at risk for air quality are precisely those in Canada: the most serious alarm concerns Ottawa, where the government has said that bad air quality currently presents a “very high risk” for people’s health , who have been asked not to leave the house.
