Fierce criticism from the Giallorossi after their performance in the Budapest final. And a photo also appears that infuriated the fans…
From a midsummer dream to the target of many Giallorossi fans. It is the sad parable of Georginio Wijnaldum, who officially ended up at the center of controversy after the disastrous Europa League final played in Budapest by the midfielder. The Puskas Arena performance was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. What indignant the Romanists is not only the performance of Wednesday evening, but the almost indolent attitude shown by the Dutchman during his first (and perhaps last) year in the capital. And while the people already seem to have downloaded “Gini” – via social networks and radio – in Trigoria they are reflecting on the future of the former Paris Saint-Germain, who is now in serious danger of returning to the base.
Angry fans

Obviously, Wijnaldum’s bad impact during the match against Sevilla, where he never managed to score, unleashed the anger of the Romanists. But what infuriates the Giallorossi people is also a photo that has been circulating on the web in the last few hours: in fact, during the penalty shootout, the Roma players watched the shots from the spot embracing, all except Gini who watched the penalties – between Ibanez and Left-handed – with hands folded behind the back. An image which, obviously, was not welcomed by the fans. Even under a post published on social media by the midfielder “A tough defeat. We gave everything, but unfortunately it wasn’t our evening”, the comments are anything but positive. Leonardo’s answer embodies the thoughts of most of the fans: “Your teammates gave everything, you gave nothing. We supported you during your long injury, we waited six months to have you back on the pitch, you should be ashamed of how you played in a European final, without heart and soul. I hope you enjoyed your Roman holiday year.” But there are also many invitations to leave the capital.
The society

Roma are also obviously reflecting on the player’s future. Wijnaldum, who arrived on loan last summer, can be bought by the Giallorossi for 8 million euros. A figure considered too high in the light of the footballer’s disappointing season: after being out for over 6 months due to a broken tibia (deciding not to have surgery), his performances have never convinced. The plus is the salary of 10 million overall (7 + 3 bonus, this year it was paid in part by PSG) that the player would have to reduce to stay at Trigoria. A definitive decision has not yet been made but the coming weeks could be Wijnaldum’s last as a Roma player.
