Next July is going to be a party at the box office beyond the “duel” between Oppenheimer and Barbie.
We usually highlight the “duel of the titans” that we will have this summer between Oppenheimer, the biopic of Christopher Nolan about the father of the atomic bomb, and Barbie, the tape of Greta Gerwig about the famous Mattel doll. Both films are released on July 21 with excellent casts, but a week before it arrives Tom Cruise with Mission Impossible: Deadly Judgment – Part 1.
This meeting on the billboard means that the month of July is going to be warm inside and outside the movie theaters, but it implies a conflict between Nolan’s film and that of his namesake, Christopher McQuarrie.

Mission Impossible: Seize IMAX Theaters
As Puck News has reported, Oppenheimer’s premiere so close to Mission Impossible: Deadly Judgment – Part 1 is a setback for Tom Cruise’s film. Christopher Nolan’s film has been shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
This has led Universal to exclusively book all the IMAX theaters it could for three weeks, breaking the possible hegemony of Mission: Impossible 7 in that premium format.
It looks like, Tom Cruise is actively protesting Paramount executives and they are trying to get a lot of premium theaters to make up for that Oppenheimer exclusivity.
To give you an idea in figures, Top Gun: Maverick entered the United States more than 110 million in IMAX theaters in 2022.
It is normal for there to be tension between the two films for these coveted theaters, but that is a hand that Oppenheimer has won. Another rooster crows with the age classification, as we have previously commented. There he has the upper hand to win Barbie.
