Renewing your driving license online is super convenient and therefore a success.
A new passport or renewal of your driver’s license always means a trip to the boring town hall. To stand in line for hours on end, go through all kinds of annoying documents and sign them. Fortunately, that is no longer necessary with your beloved pink piece of paper (nowadays a plastic card).

We all can’t escape it: one day we have to renew our driver’s license. Logical, because you’re getting older and your picture from ten years ago doesn’t look good anymore. If you are really old, you must undergo an examination. So it’s time to contact your municipality. You can now renew your driving license online in 250 of all 342 Dutch municipalities.
The number of municipalities is growing rapidly and it is expected that more will join. The purpose of renewing online is logical: applying for your driving license in a simple and fast way. This provides benefits for the citizen, but also for the municipality and the RDW. In addition, online processing produces better quality photos and prevents fraud. You can also do your thing in the evening from your lazy chair. You are no longer obliged to show up during opening hours. Delicious!
Succes
Quite a few municipalities are already participating. Thirty percent of citizens apply for their driving license digitally. So there is still something to gain. By the way, check on the RDW website whether your municipality is already in the list where you can apply online. If you are not into the online event, you can still go to the counter.
The Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management has decided to introduce online driving license renewal nationwide. There will be a change in the law at the end of 2024 to make it final, so the participating municipalities are already anticipating this (with permission).
Bummer is that you still have to travel to the town hall once. Of course to physically collect your driver’s license. It would be ideal if this could be sent in the future.
