Guadalajara director Manolo Caro, the world champagne house Moët & Chandon and the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) created the program -incubator- “Toast for a Cause”, an initiative that seeks to promote the new generation of screenwriters.
And this year they launched a new call, the results of which will be announced today at 12:30 p.m., in the FICG Press Room, at the Santander Performing Arts Complex.
For this edition, the actress and producer Karla Souza joined, who together with Manolo Caro, president of the incubator, They will announce the three winning scripts, whose authors will be able to participate in a script doctor workshop over three months, with the direct involvement of Caro and the director Gabriel Nuncio. Upon finishing this surgical work on a first version of the script, Manolo, Karla and a team specialized in the preparation of folders will help to carry out pitch sessions with possible producers and/or content platforms.
Last year the winning scripts were: David Liles with “Inés”; “Júbilo”, by Lina Lasso and “La maquillista”, by Omar Gómez Arias and Sophia Barba Heredia.
In interview with THE REPORTER, Manolo shares what happened to the 2022 winners, what they looked for in the scripts that will award this 2023 and details of the film that will begin filming in Guadalajara in 10 days.
—What were the characteristics that you considered this year for the selection of the winners of the script incubator?
—This year I had the difference, compared to last year, of having had Karla Souza and I was able to add her to give impetus to films that had a female voice, which I also include in my projects. Also We looked for scripts that were fresh, had the strength and power to turn around what is currently being done in Mexican cinema.
—In what phase are the three winning writers from last year?
—The three scripts were already presented to producers in a session we had in Mexico City, where we got very good producers and collaborators; and the results have been wonderful, because after one year, “Inés”, by David Liles, is already in the pre-production process and they will start recording by the end of the year; In addition, we recently found out that “La maquillista”, by Omar Gómez Arias and Sophia Barba Heredia, already has an onboard production company; so two of them are very advanced and it is surprising that they prospered in such a short time.
—What are the themes that you like to work on in a script?
—What I always like is to talk about freedom in any of its schemes, many times it is sexual freedom, freedom of choice; Knowing how to free yourself from a partner, from a profession, from a yoke. Also, I really like to laugh at myself, at society and at the circumstances in which I find myself and which seem pathetic to me, but which keep me entertained. What works a lot for me is to speak from chaos and that is why I always say that comfort is the worst enemy of my creativity. When I see myself on trips like this, which are wonderful and you meet your friends, you’re in a nice hotel, because that’s not where stories are born… Stories are born when you face frustration, failure, chaos.
-Which project are you working in currently?
—I am currently finishing the series “Sagrada familia”, whose second season will be released at the end of October; In addition, the project that I am about to start and that In 10 days I start shooting in Guadalajara on “Fiesta en la madriguera”, a film that is based on a novel by Juan Pablo Villalobos. The script is written by the Oscar winner for “Birdman”, Nicolás Giacobone, and the cast includes Tenoch Huerta, Teresa Ruiz, Raúl Briones, Daniel Giménez Cacho and Pierre Louis; I’m certainly happy, because I think it’s the most interesting project I’ve ever had on my desk.
