ROMA – A Catholic bishop in Italy asked people not to attend an event to see a statue of the Virgin Mary which allegedly shed tears of blood.
He said the church was still investigating “supernatural” claims about the famous statue.
In a press release issued on Thursday (1/6/2023), Bishop Marco Salvi of the Diocese of Civita Castellana, located 65 kilometers north of Rome, urged people to avoid seeing the so-called statue of the Madonna of Trevignano.
“Referring to the alleged supernatural phenomena at Trevignano Romano, I inform you that the Diocesan Commission, which was formed by me and is responsible for, is still working to… reach a thorough and definitive decision on the part of the church,” the bishop said of the statue.
Salvi went on to state, “Catholics must not organize public gatherings… which give the impression or certainty that the church has validated the Trevignano fact.”
He added, “The faithful are not advised to participate in such events until a definitive statement is made by the responsible authorities.”
According to local media reports, the Trevignano statue belonged to a 53-year-old woman named Gisella Cardia.
Cardia is a self-styled “clairvoyant” who holds monthly events to showcase the supposedly supernatural statue.
Currently a police investigation is ongoing following complaints about the statue, as well as an order to demolish the shelter built for Cardia’s viewing.
Cardia said she was “not moving an inch” and would continue to host the event.
He has developed a significant following in the five years since he began holding meetings.
He often shows “apparitions” to the audience, such as blood-red tears that supposedly seep from a statue of the Virgin Mary.
