In May of this 2023, the sale of new cars was 102 thousand 697 units, which is equivalent to 12.6% more than in May 2022according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
Meanwhile, in the period January-May 515 thousand 433 new light vehicles sold were registered, an increase of 20.4% compared to the same period last year.
Guillermo Rosales, executive president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) commented that the performance of sales compared to the immediately previous month had an increase of 5.2%, equivalent to 5,087 more sold cars compared to April.

“This level of sales is higher than sales in the same month of 2019, standing 0.3% above the 102,422 units sold then,” Rosales said.
Inflationary performance in consumption
“The positive results for May continue to reflect an improvement in the level of inventory and a better performance in the various brands in the market,” added Rosales.
In the inflationary performance on the consumption side, there has been a drop compared to previous months; however, it still maintains a higher level in price indices compared to the pre-pandemic period.

The general index of products registered an annual advance of 6%, while that of vehicles had an annual increase of 6.38%, with data to the first fortnight of May.
Among the automakers with the highest sales volume, Nissan reported a 42% increase compared to May 2022; General Motors had an increase of 11%; while Volkswagen decreased its sales by 5%.
The automakers with the highest growth in sales during May were Peugeot with 222%; Mazda, 178%; Seat, 89%; Stellantis, 36%; and Mitsubishi, 23 percent.
