The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been with us for three weeks, and although I’m sure many of you are still exploring Hyrule (how difficult it is to follow the story when there are so many things to do, huh?), there are also people who have already achieved finish it and has been left wanting more.
Or even worse: either because they don’t have a Nintendo Switch or because they just can’t afford it, they sure do. there are also many people who are wanting to play Tears of the Kingdom and right now they can’t do it.
Therefore, regardless of which of the two groups you belong to, today we bring you a selection of games in the style of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for all platforms. The quick and easy answer is Breath of the Wild or any of the above Zelda, but to make things more difficult and entertaining we are going to opt for games that are outside of the legendary saga.
Let’s make it clear that there is nothing quite like Tears of the Kingdom, so, when selecting these games, we have opted for titles that meet a series of requirements: open world, exploration, action, puzzles and fantastic setting (although there are some exceptions). Ready?
Elder Ring
And we start, of course, with one of the most obvious recommendations: Elden Ring. GOTY 2022 has pretty much everything we’re looking for: a massive world awash in secrets, development that invites us to explore rather than telling us where to go, beautifully designed main dungeons, hundreds of smaller optional dungeons…
The puzzles are not abundant in Elder Ring (puzzles in the strict sense of the word), but it makes up for it by giving capital importance to the combat system and the depth and options when creating our character. It’s hard? Yes, of course, but it is also the most affordable “souls”, so if you are looking for something similar to Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, give it without any fear.
Immortals Fenyx Rising
When Immortals Fenyx Rising was released, many were quick to compare it to Zelda and nickname it: “el Breath of the Wild de Ubisoft“. And the inspiration could not be more evident: the open world, the artistic style with bright colors, mechanics such as gliding to travel long distances, a large number of sanctuaries full of puzzles, dungeons…
And although Immortals Fenyx Rising is far from Breath of the Wild (and Tears of the Kingdom), the truth is that it is a very successful substitute that leaves a great taste in the mouth. In fact, we would dare to say that it is a “cover” of recent years, as well as one of the best Ubisoft games. As an incentive, it is inspired by Greek mythology… Something that is always a plus.
Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus It is perhaps one of the most unusual open world games out there because, despite the extent of its mapping, it is completely empty. Far from being a bad thing, that also makes it one of the most special: the feeling of loneliness, mystery and melancholy that the Team ICO game transmits is unique.
But even if there is no optional content or side quests here, Shadow of the Colossus has everything it takes to convince Zelda fans: mystical swords, combat with bow and arrows, exploration on horseback… And some unforgettable battles against colossi that are , In fact, the most epic puzzles ever seen in a video game.
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
What can we say about The Witcher 3 that hasn’t been said by now? For a long time, the CD Projekt Red game was used as an example when talking about open world RPGs; that should give you a hint of how good it is… and still is.
Because if for some reason at this point you still haven’t played it, a few months ago The Witcher 3 received a free update for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC which is a drastic improvement on the original (especially visually), so there’s no better time to give Geralt of Rivia’s adventure a try.
Genshin Impact
You might see a free-to-play game like Genshin Impact on a list of “games similar to Zelda Tears of the Kingdom“I was shocked, but miHoYo’s game has a number of clearly Zelda-inspired elements: the visual style, the exploration of an open world without barriers, the gliding, the climbing…
Keep in mind, though, that Genshin Impact gives special importance to switching between different characters to take advantage of their abilities (both in combat and when exploring) and that it has “gachapon” mechanics… But hey, You will hardly find a game that is so similar to Breath of the Wild/Tears of the KIngdom and that is also free.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
What does a war game like Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on this list? If you’ve been reading from the beginning (things you should always do, ahem), you already knew there would be an exception. Let’s explain it: so far we’ve talked about things like open world, combat, exploration, RPG elements, puzzles, dungeons…
But there’s an element of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom that no other game on this list contains. None except, perhaps, The Phantom Pain: creativity. In TotK, the Ultrahand allows us to take almost any element on the stage and use it to create whatever we can think of: from a bridge to cross an abyss… Even a mecha capable of making death rain down on Hyrule.
MGS V: The Phantom Pain contains a similar level of creativity, but with a different approach: Instead of creating, Hideo Kojima’s game gives us total freedom to face each mission and each situation in a thousand different ways.taking advantage of weapons, vehicles, characters, objects, enemies and even the stage itself.
So if you’re looking for that “I can do whatever” feeling that’s continually present in Tears of the Kingdom, The PHantom Pain might be the game that comes closest to it.
Darksiders 2
The first Darksiders was quite a surprise because behind all its angels, demons, post-apocalypse and giant men with even more giant swords, a Zelda was hiding. Yes, just as you read it: an adventure game with exploration, dungeons and puzzles. And a very good one, by the way.
Its sequel, Darksiders 2, kept that same formula and added an open world, which is why we recommend it if you’re looking for something similar to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Horizon Forbidden West
This is another one of those obvious recommendations for those who are looking for games similar to Zelda Tears of the Kingdomespecially if your preferred console is PlayStation: Horizon Forbidden West has an open world full of things to do, places to discover and murderous machines to destroy.
In addition to exploring a lush world, Horizon Forbidden West includes other elements reminiscent of Zelda such as climbing, gliding, collecting resources to upgrade weapons and armor… Or bullet time to aim the bow in slow motion!
It doesn’t have the same level of interaction with the setting as the Nintendo game, but that doesn’t mean that Aloy’s adventure is also highly recommended, especially now that the exceptional Burning Shores expansion has been released.
Dragon’s Dogma
Among the games on this list, Dragon’s Dogma It doesn’t have the best story, it doesn’t have the best open world (it can’t even be considered an open world), it doesn’t have the best missions, it doesn’t have the best graphics… But it does have one thing: the best combat your fingers are going to experience. .
Because yes, Capcom’s action RPG is considered a cult game today, it is precisely because of its magnificent action, be it brandishing greatswords, peppering enemies with double daggers, unleashing showers of arrows, summoning thunder storms or climbing up to the face of a Cyclops to stab him in the eye. How good is Dragon’s Dogma, I shit in the milk.
Eyes
And from a Capcom game… we’re going to another Capcom game. But we couldn’t make a list of games like Zelda Tears of the Kingdom without mentioning Okami. Clover’s game (the studio that would become the current Platinum Games) has all the ingredients of Zelda 3D.
Action, exploration, dungeons, puzzles, minigames… In fact, we would dare to say that of all the games on this list, Okami is the “most Zelda” of all of them. Or, at least, it manages to convey very similar sensations thanks to unique elements such as the celestial brush or its captivating artistic style, inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
We ended, how could it be otherwise, with a classic among classics: Skyrim! The years weigh on him in certain sections (such as combat), but it is still a capital adventure; an open world RPG in which we can lose ourselves for hours doing everything except the main story… Exactly like in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
And here are the games that we recommend if you have been left wanting more The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or you have no way of playing it. What other titles do you think could be part of the list? Do you have any other recommendation? We listen to you.
