PARIS – At least five people were injured in a knife attack in the Alps, French , on Thursday (8/6/2023), including four children and one adult. This was disclosed by a security source told AFP.
“Two of the children and an adult are in a critical condition,” the source said, requesting anonymity as he was not authorized to speak publicly to the media.
The previous toll given by security sources was seven people injured, including six children.
A man armed with knives attacked a group of children aged around three as they were playing in a park near a lake in the city at around 9:45 a.m. local time, a security source who asked not to be named and a local official told AFP.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin tweeted that the culprit had been caught thanks to the swift reaction of the security forces.
President Emmanuel Macron denounced the incident as an “absolute cowardice attack.”
“Very cowardly attack this morning in a park in Annecy. Children and adults are fighting for their lives. The nation is shocked. Our thoughts are with them and their families and emergency services,” he wrote on Twitter.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne’s office announced she was traveling to the scene and lawmakers in the national parliament observed a minute of silence as news of the attack spread in the French media.
The suspect in the stabbing attack told police he was an asylum seeker of Syrian origin, a police source told AFP on condition of anonymity.
The identity of the suspected attacker is being verified and has yet to be confirmed, according to the source, who added that he was deemed unknown by the security services.
