In 2016, thousands of fans screamed with excitement when Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy VII, one of the most legendary JRPGs in history, would be getting a remake. However, excitement turned to concern when the developers confirmed that the story would have multiple parts.
With this in mind, is it necessary to play the first part to enjoy the second? Logic dictates yes. However, it seems that the creatives managed to make sure that new fans can enjoy the second episode of the adventure of Cloud and company without previous baggage. This, at least, is what co-director Motomu Toriyama promised.

Is it necessary to play Final Fantasy VII Remake to understand Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
For a few days, Square Enix has been sharing images on Twitter where the developers and creatives of the project answer frequently asked questions. Thanks to this initiative we know that the development of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues smoothly and that the world will give a lot of freedom.
Now, co-director Motomu Toriyama has announced that players who have never tried the first part will be able to play the second without problems.
“We carry out preparations so that players who did not have the opportunity to play the first game can fully enjoy Rebirth,” said the creative in his response.

Of course, it is a mystery what “preparations” Motomu Toriyama is referring to. Considering that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a continuation of the first part of the remake, it’s hard to see how novice players will be able to approach the narrative without prior knowledge.
Perhaps the developers include cutscenes that summarize the story of the first game, or a glossary that explains the basics, characters, and overall plot. We’ll have to wait to find out.
