In the February Nintendo Direct, Disney Games presented a proposal that raised several eyebrows: a platformer with the characters of Mickey Mouse called Disney Illusion Island. The interesting thing is that, as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the main gimmick is that it is preferably played cooperatively with up to 4 players.
Months passed and we finally played it at Play Days within the Summer Game Fest, and our first surprise was that it’s not a pure platformer, but a metroidvania. Instead of jumping from one level to the next, we go through a gigantic map that is connected to and inspired by the Disney parks. Although it can be played individually, the cooperative presents several mechanics that surprised us and makes it the ideal way to complete it.

Together we go further
In Disney Illusion Island we can choose Mickey, Minnie, Donald or Goofy, who although each one has a different aesthetic and attitude, are controlled the same, so that none of them gives any notable advantage or disadvantage. What is that each player can choose a different difficulty; For example, we have the option to play with 1, 2, 3 or even infinite hearts, so that young and old alike can enjoy the experience.
In addition to the hearts we have, we have the ability to hug our teammates to give us an extra stamina hit, and because the animations and art are amazingly done, it looks too cute. Believe it or not, it is also something very useful, because, despite being a Mickey title, the game has its complications even for experts.
The other mechanic that we really liked is that each character can drop a rope on the platforms so that the companions who stayed below can quickly climb up to where we are. Sometimes moving forward requires double jumping or wall boosting, so waiting for our friends to do so can be time consuming, especially if they are inexperienced in platforming, so this option is very useful and different.
Each player can follow the adventure at their own pace
Love and peace (mostly)
Another detail that adds difficulty is that there is no combat, despite being a metroidvania, so enemies can only dodge. At first, the lack of a hit button feels strange, but as we progress, we get abilities like a double jump and such, which make up for the peaceful direction that was taken.
Also, it is necessary to remember that we played a small demo, so maybe there is some skill that will help us eliminate our opponents. Although there is no combat, there are boss fights where platforming becomes vital to use our environment to damage the enemy, and the one we played was very intense.
Now that we mention that we only played a demo, we must emphasize that in this test the adventure had already begun, so we were able to take a look at the map, which surprised us a lot because it is huge. It really is surprising that a title that seems so friendly and innocuous offers so much quality content and yet there are options to appeal to experts and novices alike.
You will have to avoid dangers without giving a single blow
Disney Illusion Island was one of the games that we enjoyed the most on the first day of Play Days, even though our expectations for it were high. It appeals to a child audience with its cute and cartoonish design, but at the same time it offers a very respectable level of challenge for those who have traveled every corner of the worlds of Guacamelee, Shantae and Ori. In addition, being cooperative, it can be played with friends, but also with the family.
We invite you to be very attentive to its launch because we are sure that it will be one of the most surprising titles in recent months. It is a new proposal from Disney, with its most legendary characters and carried out in an excellent way, so we believe that success is assured.
