The Summer Game Fest 2023 conference showed us many video games, some better and others that are better forgotten. The appearance of Lies of P, despite being announced, managed to surprise with a new trailer and the release of a demo…which became instantly available.
Thousands of people jumped in to test the beta, including fans of the Soulslike family. In other words: Dark SoulsElden Ring, Bloodborne and more from FromSoftware. Lies of P it presents itself as a worthy successor to Bloodborne… and for the moment it has fulfilled that promise. His demo is the proof.
Since then, I have been going around the city looking for enemies to defeat and curious details what do they do Lies of P a very attractive video game that aims as high as its main inspiration: Bloodborne, which is still in the drawer of abandoned PlayStation games. We do not have a version for PS5 and PC, but perhaps this installment will make us forget that fact.
USE: This post may add details as you explore the demo for more hours. Try to come back!
Setting: smell of Yharnam in Krat
The demo of Lies of P It has a duration of 1 hour (and little more) going at a normal pace and not getting too bogged down in the bosses. It allows us to see various areas of the krat city. While he walked its streets, it has been impossible not to remember two key games: Bioshock Infinite and Bloodborne. It is as if Neowiz Games and Round 8 Studio have brought together the best of Columbia y Yharnam.
I agree that its setting in general cannot be considered a detail as such. The point is that the world has many places worth admiring. The artistic section and the design of the levels is great. The streets are full of corpses of humans, puppets and animals (like horses), carriages, fire… The blood is fresh and there is burning structures still. This gives the incredible feeling that everything is very recent.
On the other hand, throughout the demo we can find posters pasted on the walls of the city (including the toilets) with advertising. Many remember what was seen in Bioshock. Some advertise a puppet show… and later we found a circus. All of this is somewhat reminiscent of the stromboli show, the evil puppeteer from Pinocchio. He appears in both the short story and the animated movies.
Finally, the history of Lies of P presents us with a duality similar to Bloodborne: stalkers and puppets, reminiscent of hunters and beasts. Although it is a somewhat superficial comparison, it remains to be seen if the conflict of the former moves away from or more or less closer to the events of the FromSoftware game.
Combat and equipment: metal, oil and a dash of magic
The most surprising details of Líes of P are in the combat and the equipment. The highlight and one of my favorites is the Pulse cell (vials of life). We have a limited number, which we can increase over time, and which are recharged in the Stargazers, which are the Dark Souls bonfires. You don’t have to farm them como en Bloodborne o Demon’s Souls Remake.
The most interesting (and player-friendly) feature is that once spent, we can reload a unit by hitting to enemies. This makes Lies of P a much more accessible experience for many players, having the possibility of having at least a burden of life after a few hits.
Lies of P adds a very interesting mechanic that is incredibly detailed: weapons break. And before you throw your hands up in your heads remembering Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the gun does not disappear when it breaks and you can fix it anytime indefinitely. Of course, you need a few seconds to fill the status bar.
Los controls (control on PS5) are basically the same as in Bloodborne and Dark Souls with a few exceptions, making them feel familiar to any fan and pick up the pace very quickly. The Lies of P demo shows that there are puzzles that are resolved by choice of conversations. There is a correct answer and we must pay attention to the dialogues and the context to get it right.
Clothes have no stats. Only the aesthetic section of the character changes. Instead, we have mechanical parts for the arm that will increase stats and grant passives such as defense against melee damage, for example. Safe areas have two types of training dummies or sparring to test the weapons. One is static and one does a direct attack so you can test blocks, parrys, and guard break.
These are some details that have amazed me about the Demo of Lies of P. Now it’s your turn: what other details have you seen that have surprised you? What do you think of the wear and tear and repair of weapons? And the setting? The comments are all yours to tell your experience.
