Attack on Titan has shown that it knows how to handle intrigue and use the mysteries of its plot like few anime have managed. It has shown us that it has a careful history behind it, playing with its past and present. This is enhanced with the great use of several of its secondary characters.
Among them, Grisha Jaeger, former bearer of the Attack Titan, stands out. Despite his few minutes on screen, without various acts of Grisha, the plan woven by Eren for years and the Rumble would not have been possible. We explain the crucial acts of the character below:
Grisha, his ideals and his alliance with El Búho
Before becoming Eren’s father, Grisha’s past was marked by conflicts over his own ideals. He became an important member of a group of Eldians, supporting the Eldian past and even married Dina Fritz, a member of the Eldian royal family and their marriage gave rise to Zeke.
Eren Kruger made a spectacular appearance in the third season of the series
A spy for the enemy army and sympathizer with the activities of Grisha’s group known as The owl also had great importance. He was at that time the carrier of the Attack Titan and was also influenced by Eren as we saw in the final stretch of the third season. The past of Owl himself, whose real name is Eren Kruger, and the dramatic death of Faye Jaeger would facilitate the strong alliance between the two.
Grisha would end up inheriting the Attack Titan from Kruger and would target break through the walls to make contact with the Founding Titan. His intentions were to end Marley’s oppression of the considered People of Ymir belonging to the Island of Paradis, thus ending various inequalities and injustices in society. Once there, things slowly began to change for him.
Grisha Jaeger, his new life and his feud with the Reiss family
In this part Grisha radically changed his life upon entering the civilization of Eldia becoming a doctor and husband of Carla Jaeger, the mother of the future Eren Jaeger.
Grisha’s new life was one of the reasons for his biggest decision
Grisha would decide to bury his past in the basement of his house, this being one of the first mysteries in the series. However, the most important act of his would be stop the ceremony of delivery of the Titan Founder in the chapel of the Reisssomething that happened every 13 years.
Grisha would make an appearance in the middle of the ceremony, pleading with the important Reiss family for peace with the Eldians of Paradis. Given the refusal of a Frieda Reiss influenced by Karl Fritz and his unshakeable convictions, Grisha intended to transform into an Attack Titan, but his own convictions and the presence of children in the place made him stop.
Eren’s influence on Grisha
We move on to what has become one of the most shocking scenes in the anime. A script twist that surprised many fans of Attack on Titan: Eren himself was the one who convinced Grisha to attack the Reiss family causing a massacre and taking the Founding Titan, also obeying Eren’s instructions to leave Rod Reiss alive. All this he was able to do through his future memories and thanks to the powers of the Attack Titan, turning Grisha into a makeshift minion using fear.
Eren takes control of the situation
Eren also made Grisha witness to the atrocities that the Rumble will entail in the future. Grisha would use Zeke as a last resortasking him to stop Eren and prevent his plans.
The pressure of the Eren of the future made Grisha give his Titan power to his son, allowing himself to be devoured by his version of Pure Titan. We can say after everything that happened that Grisha’s role in Eren’s plan was fundamentalbeing several of its actions essential for its development.
