The number one of the ECA in a meeting with the clubs in Istanbul: “Intelligent people who admit their mistakes are always welcome”
Nasser Al Khelaifi holds no hard feelings. Indeed, he is ready to welcome back the rebel clubs of the Superlega within the Eca which he has presided over since Andrea Agnelli decided to resign to give life, with Real Madrid and Barcelona, to the alternative project to the Champions League. A project that failed in the bud, formally still standing, but from which the new Juventus leaders now intend to exit: “Intelligent people who admit their mistakes are always welcome”, commented the Qatari leader on the sidelines of the meeting of the association of European clubs , in Istanbul.
ERRORS
—
“I think – explains the PSG president – that it is the right and intelligent decision on their part to leave the so-called not-so-Super League. There is no future there, there is no project, there is nothing, so it makes sense to go back to the family. It’s a waste of time, energy and money, and all for nothing. So they better focus on the club, get back into the family and the real football ecosystem. Smart people realize mistakes and correct them. So I think it’s a great decision by Juventus. Of course I welcome all who realize their mistake. And that’s what they should do. It applies to Juventus and to all the others”.
DECISIONS
—
Asked about the problems concerning the black and white club like the Catalan one, Al Khelaifi distances himself: “They are their problems which I won’t get into, they have their lawyers who help them solve them. Of course, if they want to return as ECA members, I would fully encourage them to do so. Honestly, I think it’s better for them. They will be in a better position. People will respect them more, try to help them more. Right now, they’re alone and it seems like they’re against everyone, which isn’t good for them. I don’t want to talk about other presidents and the “not so Super League”. I don’t want to waste time, they know their clubs better than me. I am not criticizing anyone. They know what they’ve done, what they have to do next.”
MANCHESTER UNITED
—
Finally, on the rumors that indicate him as one of the possible intermediaries for the purchase of Manchester United by another Qatari fund, Al Khelaifi concludes as follows: “I don’t work for anyone, but I want the best for football. Of course I will offer my opinion if asked, and I would for anyone, not just Manchester United, based on my experience alone. I have nothing to do with the Manchester United operation, PSG is my club and it’s in my heart. As president of the ECA, I would like to have better competitions and stronger clubs. So all investors, not just Qataris, are welcome, if everything is done according to the rules.”
