Streamer Nick ‘NICKMERCS’ Kolcheff found himself at the center of controversy after sharing a controversial comment on educating children on LGBTQIA+ issueswhich sparked a wave of backlash on social media criticizing it, prompting Activision to remove its Call of Duty custom pack from the in-game store.
The day after his statements NICKMERCS made a transmission on Twitch where he maintained his position, indicating that he “did not intend to upset anyone”, but repeating that he does not believe that the school is the “place to talk about things like that”. “It’s not that he thinks it shouldn’t be talked about. If that’s what you got from that tweet, then you’re just wrong.”
But his words did not go unnoticed by Activision, which clearly I remove the custom “content creator” package from your storewhich also featured streamer TimTheTatman in it.
“Due to recent events, we have removed the NICKMERCS Operator Pack from the Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone store,” Activision confirmed. “We are focused on celebrating Pride with our employees and our community.”
The removal of the custom cosmetic pack has raised questions about whether this decision is temporary or permanent by the CoD editor. In addition, it is not yet clear if existing owners of the package will also be affected by this measure, or will be able to request a refund.
In a similar case at Activision Blizzard, the Overwatch League designed unique MVP skins for the outstanding player of the year, but after allegations of abuse against 2019 MVP Jay ‘Sinatraa’ Won, the developers removed the custom skin and allowed for players to remove it from their collection, and request a refund.
This incident demonstrates how streamers’ comments can have a negative impact on their public image and business partnerships. As streamers become increasingly influential public figures, they need to be careful what they say online to avoid anger and outrage from their audience and potential adverse business consequences.
