10 facts about Predator (1987).
Predator Initially, the role of the hunting alien was intended to be played by Jean-Claude Van Damme. However, due to issues with the suit, it was decided to redesign the Predator and cast Kevin Peter Hall to play the iconic character. Legendary special effects artist Stan Winston was responsible for creating the Predator’s design. His innovative and detailed approach to the creation of the costume contributed to the alien’s intimidating and unique appearance. Filming took place in the jungle of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The extreme conditions, such as intense heat and humidity, presented challenges for both cast and crew. During a scene in which the cast prepare to escape in a helicopter, Schwarzenegger improvised the line, “Get to the choppa!” (“Get to the helicopter!”). This phrase has become iconic and is widely recognized in popular culture. The Predator’s optical camouflage effect, which allowed it to become invisible, was added during post-production. Originally, the intention was for the character to camouflage himself using infrared lenses. The Predator’s camouflage design was influenced by a camouflage technique used by the military called dazzle camouflage. This effect confuses visual perception by using geometric patterns. Director John McTiernan, known for his work on Predator, also directed another 1980s action classic, Die Hard (1988), starring Bruce Willis. One of the actors who participated in the film is Shane Black who gave life to Hawkins. 30 years later, he directed another film in the saga, Predator, which was released in 2018. The Predator’s design was based on a combination of insect and reptilian features. The special effects team was looking for a menacing, alien look that would bring out a lot of the human characters. During the filming of Rocky IV (1985), director John McTiernan joked that to make Rocky’s fight more interesting, they should add an alien. This joke eventually became the basis for Predator.
