A team of scientists from the United States Navy has caused a stir this week by developing a video game that can be played by marine mammals. This project is part of the latest research on the cognitive development of these creatures and has been demonstrated by Spike, a sea lion that is one of the animals that has participated in the study.
According to reports, Spike was the first animal to learn to control the game’s cursor, which is operated by buttons. The animal has mastered the game so well that it has even passed several of the most difficult levels of the project. When the animal achieves the goal proposed by its trainers, they applaud it and reward it with herrings, encouraging it to continue advancing.

The US Navy indicates that these investigations are part of its Marine Mammals program, which aims to protect seals and dolphins in the Pacific. That is why they have created this type of video game to improve the cognitive abilities of mammals, trying to make them live as long as possible. In addition, the researchers have sought that, in this process, the animals enjoy the training sessions and, in some way, entertain themselves.
Something that has been highlighted by the principal investigator named Kelley Winship, who indicated that: “I care a lot about these animals and the lives they lead. I love all the interesting things that we can see with this research, but at the end of the day, I want to see them happy and enjoying”.
