Unity, the company that creates the video game engine of the same name, announced this week the layoff of 600 workers, something that, according to the company, fits your quest to reduce the number of offices around the world from 58 to 30.
This is the third wave of layoffs within Unity: previously, they had already laid off 200 workers in June 2022 and 300 in January 2023, a figure to which another 600 people are now added, equivalent to 8% of the force company employment. As mentioned by John Riccitello, CEO of Unity, the layoffs respond to changes in the company’s objectives, strategies and priorities, thus maintaining the same vision, but that the reduction in personnel is about preparing for further growth.
The last quarter of 2022 marked positive earnings for Unity, but it wasn’t enough.
Unity Software began these changes after reporting results for the fourth quarter of 2022, the first profitable quarter since they began publishing, which brought in $451 million. In addition to this, the company entered 1.39 billion in 2022, marking record profits for the company. However, these figures were not enough to maintain a sustainable pace, and during the first quarter of 2023 the figures were lower than expected, which led to the reduction of workers and the number of company offices to maintain the sustainability of the company.
Unity is a tool that has even been used to create movies
Unity’s woes come on top of mass layoffs by tech companies like Meta and Google, leaving thousands of workers jobless. For its part, Unity has been contributing to the video game industry since 2004 thanks to its engine that has even served to bring some films to the cinema, such as the live action of The Lion King. Unfortunately, the technological crisis leads them to take measures to regulate the business, so it is necessary to hope that this will show positive results in the future.
