KIEV – Head of Defense Intelligence Agency Ukraine (GUR) General Kyrylo Budanov vowed that his organization would continue to kill people Russia around the world.
Budanov was charged with terrorism offenses by a Moscow court in absentia last month. Russian authorities have linked him to a series of sabotage and assassination operations, most recently a plot to assassinate top Russian officials in Crimea.
In an interview with Yahoo News, which took place last month but was published earlier this week, Budanov stated: “What Russia calls terrorism, we call liberation.”
Asked whether GUR was responsible for the murder in Moscow of Russian journalist and political activist Darya Dugina last year, he gave a vague answer.
“Don’t continue on that topic,” he said.
“All I will comment on is that we have killed Russians and we will continue to kill Russians everywhere in the world until Ukraine is completely victorious,” he said.
Regardless of Budanov’s claims, Washington is indicated to have intervened to control GUR’s actions.
Recently leaked Pentagon documents show that when Budanov ordered his subordinates to prepare for mass attacks on Russian cities in February, American spies, who were monitoring his communications, stepped in to abort the operation.
Since Budanov spoke to Yahoo News, two explosive-laden drones have been dropped over the Kremlin and a car bomb seriously injured Russian writer and activist Zakhar Prilepin.
A suspect in the car bomb attack on Prilepin admitted to Russian law enforcement that he had been hired by an unnamed Ukrainian intelligence service official.
