KIEV – Armed Forces Ukraine on Friday (26/5/2023) announced that its military had destroyed warship big Russia in the attack on the port of Berdiansk on Thursday.
The port, recently occupied by Moscow forces with several warships in dock, was rocked by a series of massive explosions shortly after dawn yesterday.
Videos posted on social media showed a large fire engulfing the wharf side, with a series of secondary explosions reverberating across the port city.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces identified the large Russian ship that was destroyed as “Saratov”.
“In the Azov operational zone, according to the latest information, a large Saratov landing ship was destroyed during an assault on the occupied port of Berdiansk. The large landing ships Caesar Kunikov and Novocherkassk (also) were damaged. Other enemy losses are being clarified,” the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a statement. reported by CNN.
Meanwhile, Russian media reports said several Moscow ships had unloaded military equipment off Berdiansk in recent days—without mentioning yesterday’s claims of a major Ukrainian attack.
US military officials have said Ukraine may have carried out a successful strike against the Russian ships in Berdiansk, although it was not clear what type of weapon was used in the attack.
The comments echoed a similar statement from the UK Ministry of Defence, which said Ukrainian forces had struck “high value targets” in Russian-occupied Ukraine, including landing craft and an ammunition depot in Berdiansk.
Analysis of videos posted on social media on Thursday showed that a Russian Navy ship left the port immediately after the explosion.
