Final Fantasy XVI is, without a doubt, one of the biggest releases of 2023. The community is very excited and anxious as the release is just over a month away. Unfortunately, thousands of players from one country will be left with the desire to try it.
Unlike most installments of the Japanese franchise that are aimed at young audiences, Final Fantasy XVI has a dark and serious tone, as it will be an experience for adults where the plot will address complex issues. This new mature approach is reflected in the ranking.
Unfortunately, it seems that the more serious tone took its toll on Square Enix. What happens is that a country decided to ban the release of the JRPG, which will affect all players in the region.

Censorship? Final Fantasy XVI will stay out of this country
Specifically, fans living in Saudi Arabia will be unable to purchase the Japanese RPG title. Through a post on Twitter, the Public Media Authority of that country confirmed that the video game will not be released because the responsible company refused to make the relevant adjustments.
“For fans of Final Fantasy XVI, we would like to clarify that it will not be released in the Kingdom due to the publisher’s unwillingness to make the necessary modifications,” reads the official statement.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Media Authority declined to disclose what “necessary modifications” Square Enix refused to make. It is possible that the Japanese company decided not to censor the title and keep the adult themes and scenes intact.
As the Insider Gaming media recalls, Saudi Arabia has a long history of banning releases that feature violence, depiction of drugs and alcohol, nudity, or foul language. The Last of Us: Part II, Grand Theft Auto and God of War are some of the titles that were banned in the country.
