Crime Boss Rockay City, mediocre but “with charm of series B”
Crime Boss Rockay City was announced with great fanfare at The Game Awards in December 2022. It was a total surprise, nobody knew that such a game existed, and to present it the legendary actor Michael Madsen, from Reservoir Dogs or Kill Bill, came up, besides GTA 3.
But at its release, advertising was minimal, as well as its impact on social networks. Very few people talked about this game, which currently has a 52 on Metacriticwith only 34 media reviews, and 5.5 in user notes (only 68 ratings).
It is a mix between Payday (cooperative robberies), with a narrative campaign for a single player, in which many actors from the 90s appear, such as Kim Basinger, Danny Glober, Danny Trejo, Michael Madsen, Michael Rooker o Cuck Norris.
Some critics praised its game design (which is “roguelike”, even if it doesn’t look like it), its ambition, and a “B-movie charm” despite its flimsy shooting mechanics.
If you play on console, June 22 you will have the opportunity to decide if you give Crime Boss Rockay City a try. Who knows, maybe in a few years it will become a cult game…
