These are just a few of the many elements (plus: a Super Bowl ad, an indefinite hold-on competition for a giant version of Excalibur, and illusionists using their skills to swindle the unwary) that make up this magnificent and mystifying new series. on HBO Max: ‘Mrs. Davis‘.
Mrs. Davis is not the name of the protagonist, a nun married to Jesus (like all of them, it could be said, although here she is shown in a different way than usual) but that of the artificial intelligence that advises and watches over all of humanity through of headphones. Except for people like Simone, this nun who refuses to listen to the voice of the AI and sets out on a quest for the Holy Grail. On her journey to all corners of the world, she will meet old relationships and discover that many people have things to hide.
Mrs. Davis is created and written by Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez. The second is a screenwriter for ‘Big Bang Theory’ and the first, one of the creators of ‘Lost’ and responsible for series as stimulating as ‘The Leftovers’ or the recent and magnificent HBO version of ‘Watchmen’. In one of Lindelof’s few forays into the movies, the funny ‘The Hunt’, he coincided with Betty Gilpin, also the star of ‘Mrs. Davis’, and who carries all the weight of the plot with that peculiar acting style, brimming with micro-gestures and subterranean humor.
The result of all this hodgepodge of ingredients is an absolutely unpredictable comedy, with a delirious rhythm and who enjoys twisting the conventions of the series “with surprise” in the style of ‘Lost’ itself. ‘Mrs. Davis’ drinks more, in fact, from satirical religious intrigues like ‘Preacher’ and is one of the undisputed surprises of the year with its mix of adventure, parody, biblical references, thunderous performances and script twists literally every few minutes.
