Carl Pei is a big fan of science fiction, as he has previously confessed. In an interview with Computer Today he has revealed one of his favorite recent movies in the genre, which is coming soon to Netflix.
The world of technology and science fiction often drink from the same references and advances in fields such as artificial intelligence increasingly resemble those that have come from the imagination of filmmakers and writers of this genre.
For this reason, it is not surprising that many executives in the sector are great fans of science fiction cinema and literature, as is the case of Carl Pei, co-creator of OnePlus and who, after his departure, created Nothing, a brand of which he is now CEO.
In an interview with Computer Hoy, the Chinese-Swedish director confessed that one of his favorite films is Vanilla Sky, a Cameron Crowe film starring Tom Cruise and Penélope Cruz, which adapts the Spanish Abre los ojos, by Alejandro Amenábar.
In that same interview, Pei has named another of his favorite science fiction movies, this time a series of movies whose sequel will be released this year on Netflix.
“I recently saw wandering earth 2. I think it’s very very good science fiction“, assures Carl Pei.
The Wandering Earth: Chinese Sci-Fi From a “Very Clever Author”
Netflix
The wandering Earth (The wandering Earth, in English) is a series of science fiction films shot in China that are based on the short story of the same name by author Liu Cixin.
“That author (Liu Cixin) seems very very intelligent to me”, has valued the technological visionary. Although not much is known, Netflix is expected to adapt another trilogy by this science fiction writer, one of the genres he has been most committed to lately.
In the first film, released in 2019, the Earth is endangered by the growing Sun, which in 2058 is turning into a gigantic red star that will engulf the Earth in the next 100 years.
Carl Pei, founder and CEO of Nothing: “Foldables do not fill a need, plus the device industry bores me”
Hopes are placed on developing a system of gigantic ion engines that can propel the Earth out of the Solar System, towards another star system with habitable conditions. But this plan runs into difficulties because of terrorist groups who believe that the future of the human race lies in digital immortality.
The first part of The Wandering Earth, directed by Frant Gwo, was released first in China and then internationally. Netflix announced the decision in February of the same 2019 that incorporated it into its catalog, where it has gained a lot of popularity.
At the end of January 2023, the second part of the series was released in China, wandering earth 2, Directed again by Frant Gwo. Presumably, Carl Pei saw it after its premiere in China and it is expected to reach the mass audience of Netflix this year, although it is not present in its catalog at the moment.
In that same interview, Pei not only talked about film tastes but also confessed what his favorite device of all time and the current one is, beyond his Nothing brand. And no, none of them is mobile.
