The Little Mermaid begins its run in Chinese theaters with disappointing numbers
The data for the first weekend in theaters of the live action of The Little Mermaid has been revealed. Although the film has been successful in most of the territories where it was released, its box office in China is disappointing.
The new Disney disappoints in China
According to EntGroup, The Little Mermaid earned 2.63 million dollars in China after finishing its first weekend, data that makes it the film of Disney with the lowest income in said country than we have been since 2023. If we compare The Little Mermaid with the other projects of the company, we have to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever reached $5.9 million during its opening weekend, while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania earned 19 million and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 27 million.
Early box office projections for The Little Mermaid claimed that the film would not be a hit in China, as advance sales only reached as high as $13,000. The film ended up grossing 550,000 on its opening day. At the moment, Fast X leads the Chinese box office with a total of $113 million.
Despite The little Mermaid might end up being a huge flop in China, the Disney movie has been a hit elsewhere. Domestically, the film grossed $118 million, and worldwide, a total of $185.8 million.
