Kymco’s top-of-the-range maxiscooter becomes even richer in equipment, with a more tourer connotation that sees Traction Control, an electrically adjustable windscreen and other new features
26 maggio 2023
Born in 2017 and subsequently evolved until 2021 with the ETS version, the Kymco AK 550 is the flagship of Kyang-Yang Motors Corporation (Kymco, to understand each other): a maxiscooter that has built part of its success on sportiness with over 5,000 units registered in Italy and which now comes to us in the new premium version which complements, and does not replace, the AK 550 ETS.
The AK 550 Premium places more emphasis on the comfortwith a new aerodynamic profile of the front shield, able to protect more on long journeys, and with a taller electric windshieldma Traction Control also arrives.
On Kymco’s newcomer we find all the equipment of the AK 550 ETS, with some additions we have already mentioned: the Ride by Wire ETS (Electronic Throttle System) now allows you to manage the new Traction Control TCS that adds to the Cruise Control and al Noodoe navigation system thus making long journeys more relaxing and enjoyable.
Also standard’AIBS Advanced Intelligent Brake System which integrates the ABS function with the Cornering ABS function.
The command bridge has also been updated and the handlebar switch blocks have been redesigned to control the new functions in pursuit of maximum functionality.
Goodwill is always keyless, but second generation: the starter rotor disappears and is replaced by a practical central “click and go” ignition button which automatically unlocks the electric steering lock and the old options provided by the knob selector are now replaced by separate buttons present in the rear shield.
Among the standard features are the USB socket, the heated grips, the parking brake and the windscreen which now becomes electrically adjustable, just as the opening of the saddle under which a full-face helmet can be stowed is electric: the compartment is illuminated with an adjustable courtesy light, while on the right side of the shield back plate we find a glove compartment. The instrumentation is digital LCD, with the classic information, and integrates the Noodoe navigation system and the TPMS.
The engine base has not changed compared to the 2021 update, but Traction Control has been added: the 550 cc 8-valve horizontal twin-cylinder engine with liquid cooling is capable of developing a maximum power of 51 HP (37.5 kW) at 7,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 52.3 Nm at 5,750 rpm and the declared maximum speed is 160 km/h; the final transmission department confirms the belt (little maintenance and smooth operation), while three driving modes are available: “Sport” with TCS active, “Sport” with TCS deactivated and finally “Rain” mode with TCS active.
The AK 550 is a maxiscooter with a gratifying ride, thanks to a well-centred chassis which is practically fully confirmed also for the version Premium: so let’s see the known aluminum frameto which the engine is centrally attached, with a double steering plate connected to one upside-down fork with 41mm stems and 120 mm of travel, while at the rear we find a double-sided swingarm in aluminum. The rims are 15 inches, with 120/70-15 tires respectively on the front and 160/60-15 on the rear, on which the braking system acts entrusted to a double 270 mm diameter disc on the front and single 260 mm at the rear, with Brembo calipers and Bosch 9.1 dual-channel ABS, equipped with cornering function.
The dimensions remain almost unchanged compared to the ETS: wheelbase of 1,580 mm, weight of 238 kg and saddle 790 mm high from the ground.
New is the light and narrow belt drive which limits unsprung masses to a minimum, ensuring optimal weight distribution (50/50).
