SINGAPORE – One person grandpa 86 years old, Pak Kian Huat, on Monday (22/5/2023) was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the High Court Singapore . He was sentenced to prison after confessing kill his housemate in 2019 ago.
As quoted from Channel News Asia, Huat hacked to death his partner, 79-year-old Lim Soi Moy, with a sharp weapon. The incident took place in the Housing Council flat they were staying in. Previously the two elderly were involved in a dispute about the arrangement of rooms in their flat.
Huat pleaded guilty to one count of murder. While delivering the sentence, Judge See Kee Oon said that Huat’s attack on the victim was carried out “deliberately and cruelly and brutally”.
“It was a senseless attack on a helpless victim,” said the High Court judge. “He set out to kill the victim because of his self-induced and completely misplaced perception of grievance,” he continued.
At an earlier court hearing last September, Huat’s guilty plea could not be taken after he made numerous objections to the prosecutor’s statement of facts.
On Monday, speaking through a Chinese translator, Huat acknowledged without qualification the statement of fact and raised no further objections.
Huat and Lim met as teenagers in the 1950s and went on to have four children together. However, this couple never married. The court heard that their relationship had been strained over the years, in part because Huat was hot-tempered and abusive towards Lim and at times towards their children.
Encouraged by her children, Lim moved out of the family home with one of their daughters in 1980 to avoid Huat. Subsequently, Huat continued to care for the other three children until they grew up and moved out.
The couple reconnected through their children in 2004. Huat then asked to live with Lim in a four-room flat, as he did not want to live alone. The two sleep in separate rooms.
On the evening of August 31, 2019, Huat had an altercation with Lim. Then in the early hours of the morning, he slashed Lim. After committing the murders, Huat called his son to tell him that he had killed Lim, and alerted the police. His son then called the police.
